Mamak delivers the fabulous foods of Malaysia with professionalism and lots of theatre – you can watch the chefs make roti, murtabak and satay alongside lots of other classic Malaysian dishes through the front window on Goulburn St, Chinatown. So what to check out at Mamak – one of our all-time favourites is kari ikan – a spicy fish curry with pure white chunks of deep sea fish, okra, tomatoes and eggplant, The fish with its solid white flesh and flaky texture and a strong taste of the sea is a wonderful balance to the sweetness of the okra and eggplant with the creaminess of the curry.
Another favourite that we’ve had here and in Bali is the classic nasi lemak – originally roadside food, you choose your curry and alongside comes coconut tinged rice, peanuts, cucumber, hard-boiled egg and crispy anchovies – the all-in-one meal. Also this time we tried murtabak – the classic Malaysian pancake filled with spicy meat, cabbage, eggs and onion – a meal on its own. To round it off, kacang belacan – long beans, stir-fried with shrimp paste and chillies – simply perfect and like being in KL. And our choice of drink – lime flavoured iced tea.
This is the place for roti – try the roti bawang – filled with finely sliced cooked red onions. And you can watch the chefs skillfully make them – a show on its own.
Mamak – the authentic taste of Malaysia – a cool Sydney restaurant. Good food, efficient service and the true flavours of Asia. Perfect!

Dear faintheart and fairweather,
My personal favourites at this restaurant are the Maggi goreng, satays and roti canai, interpretations which can rival some of the best in KL.
You’re right – for us roti at Mamak is the best and transports you to KL.
