We’d been to Icebergs many times before but always for lunch – the vista of Bondi Beach on a clear blue Sydney day is definitely one of the essential ingredients in this perfect recipe. So this time it’s Icebergs for dinner. We were shown to our table – table no. 1 which sits on its own directly overlooking the sea. And so the Icebergs experience began with a couple of glasses of Veuve Clicqout, forgoing our ritual evening martini – just this once – and it was a perfect start.
The menu at Icebergs is classic Italian staples interspersed with some Sydney greats -fresh seafood, a huge selection of fish, pasta and risotto. I went for the steamed spanner crab, venetian style polenta, fresh sorrel – the shredded crab was juicy and sweet and contrasted well with the polenta which could have been undersalted but the combination balanced it beautifully. Faintheart, who dives into raw fish whenever its on a menu – opted for blue eye trevella ceviche marinated in lime, ginger and chilli on radicchio leaves. The overriding taste was a clean citrus taste with the freshness of the fish and ginger – the fragrance of this dish was sublime, he wanted more!
Next, I choose the risotto quattro formaggio, pistachios – slightly al dente as it should be with a creamy cheese flavour. My partner went for the Torta di funghi (a tart of puff pastry) enclosing cultivated mushrooms sitting on a bed of kale served with mascarpone polenta. The earthiness of the mushrooms contrasted well with the light buttery pastry case – the bitterness of the kale provided another counterbalance. I went for a pinot gris from Alto Adige and Faintheart, a pinot noir from Mornington Peninsula – the sommelier’s recommendation was on the money! To finish, we shared Sicilian cannoli and espresso – a great finish to the meal.
We’ve always thought that if you only have 24 hours in Sydney, this is the place to spend a couple of hours as it really has the essence of this town rolled into a tight package. A spectacular Sydney view, great fresh food, perfect service, modern space with lots of confidence and no curtsy to motherland – thank you. All very Sydney and we love it – Icebergs manages this all effortlessly – a very cool Sydney restaurant.
PS- Icebergs floor staff always look very modern, very cool and very professional.
