It’s not easy finding Eau de Vie bar in Darlinghurst unless you’re aware of the Kirketon Hotel – and even when you do find it, on some nights during the week, they might be a crowd that jumping to some DJ as you enter this hotel . But push your way through that lot and all will be revealed – double doors that will lead you down a small hall to Eau de Vie.
This is a wonderful bar – I’m not really one for theme bars but they seem to be the flavour at the moment for bars around the world. But this one does it very well with its speakeasy joint feel and a big nod to 40′s prohibition in the USA, the lights are low and so is the music. The winner in this bar is service, old fashioned service – from the very professional bartenders to the maitre d’.
So how do the cocktails stack up – a classic martini as always is the test. Passed with flying colours on the technical aspects and the presentation will knock your socks off. Your martini (and all cocktails) comes in a conical flask sitting in a bed of ice – you get to finish tailoring your martini yourself and keep it at the perfect temperature. This is service at its ultimate.
You start to understand why they have won Australian Bar of the Year 2011 at the Gourmet Traveller restaurant awards plus Cocktail Bar of the Year and New Bar of the Year at the Time Out Bar Awards but most importantly made it into the World’s 50 Best Bars.
The team at Eau De Vie have even produced videos so you can try the cocktails at home – check out how to make a martini. Roll on the new bar and restaurant – Roosevelt that the Eau De Vie owners are opening soon in Orwell St, Potts Point where Apres once was.
